Markets and Capital Pushed America Outward

Industrial Growth and the Search for Markets

1. Industrial production expanded rapidly after the Civil War. Steel, oil, machinery, processed food, and manufactured goods transformed the United States into a leading industrial economy.
2. Domestic demand did not always absorb rising output. Business leaders feared overproduction, falling prices, and unstable profits during economic downturns.
3. The depression beginning in 1893 intensified concern. Bank failures, unemployment, railway bankruptcies, and declining demand encouraged arguments for overseas markets.
4. Exports became increasingly important. Manufacturers wanted customers in Latin America, East Asia, and the Pacific for American machinery, textiles, and consumer goods.
5. Agricultural producers also sought foreign buyers. Farmers producing wheat, cotton, tobacco, and other staples faced low prices and heavy debt.
6. Expansionists connected prosperity with access. They argued that diplomatic influence and naval protection were necessary to keep routes and markets open.
7. Economic expansion did not require formal colonies in every case. Trade agreements, investment, naval bases, and political pressure could secure commercial influence.

Finance, Investment, and Corporate Interests
