² suan (酸): a Mandarin Chinese character with multiple registers of meaning including the sour taste of fermentation, the physical sensation of suppressed emotion, and, in classical literary usage, a particular kind of unspoken grief associated with injustice or unacknowledged loss; it has no single equivalent in English.
