Think of the Higher Level Essay (HLE) as your one chance in IB English to breathe, plan, and actually think before writing. No ticking clocks, no sweaty palms, no last-minute scribbles.
It is a 1,200 to 1,500 word essay completed over time with teacher support and externally marked by an IB examiner.
Key HLE requirements
It is only for HL students.
It’s based on texts you've already studied in class.
But don’t even think about choosing the same ones you used for your Individual Oral or Paper 2. IB will not be impressed.
You can write about a literary work or a non-literary text (like ads, speeches, articles), but non-literary texts must all be the same text type and by the same creator, no Frankenstein mashups.
Translations are allowed if they are published translations, rather than informal or machine translated versions.
Choosing a focused Line of Inquiry
A Line of Inquiry (LOI) is a focused question about the text, explored through one of IB's seven concepts such as identity, culture, or transformation.
The essay title and thesis are developed by the student, with the teacher offering guidance rather than providing the argument.
Note
Formal academic essay
Done over weeks/months, not under exam pressure
Based on class texts (but not your IO or Paper 2 texts)
Your idea, your argument, your structure
Scholarly criticism is not required, though it can be used if it strengthens the argument.
It gives students space to develop an independent academic voice.
Tip
In short, the HLE allows students to demonstrate detailed understanding of a chosen text without exam time pressure.
It's your academic glow-up moment. Don’t waste it.
