IB English A Lang & Lit Salience & Balance Notes

Salience and Balance Controls Focus in Texts

1. When a text is read or watched, words and images do not appear at random. The text guides attention.
2. Some elements instantly grab attention, such as a loud image, a repeated phrase, or a bold idea. That is salience.
3. Good writing does not just demand attention. It also knows when to pull back.
4. That is balance. It helps standout moments feel powerful without making the whole text feel chaotic.

Salience

1. Salience is the element that grabs attention.
2. Writers do this on purpose.
3. They want you to focus on key ideas, emotions, or symbols, so they highlight them using specific techniques.
4. Common ways writers create salience:
   1. Contrast: Light vs. dark, rich vs. poor, calm vs. chaos.
   2. Repetition: A phrase repeated over and over.
   3. Unusual formatting: CAPITALS, italics, bold text.
   4. Powerful diction: Words that carry strong emotion or connotation.
   5. Imagery: Vivid or unusual mental pictures that stand out on the page.

Balance

1. Once a writer emphasises something, it still needs to fit with everything else.
2. Too much salience without balance feels overwhelming.
3. Balance smooths the audience's experience and makes the whole text feel thoughtful, not just dramatic.
4. How writers create balance:
   1. Tone shifts: A serious moment followed by something lighter.
   2. Pacing: Fast action balanced with slower, reflective moments.
   3. Opposing images: Pairing extreme heat with cooling calm.
   4. Structural symmetry: Repeated patterns or mirrored scenes.

Why Salience and Balance Matter

1. To guide meaning: Salient elements tell us what to focus on. Balance makes sure that focus fits into the bigger picture.
2. To shape emotion: A scene that’s too loud or too flat doesn’t hit as hard. Salience gives intensity, balance gives rhythm.
3. To maintain flow: Strong writing feels smooth because balance prevents the salient features from overwhelming everything else.

Salience and Balance in Action

1. These tools also appear beyond writing.
2. Visual artists and designers rely on the same principles.
3. Techniques in visual media:
   1. Color contrast: Bright colors against muted backgrounds
   2. Composition: Placing key elements off-center to balance space
   3. Lighting: Bright highlights + shadowed areas to direct attention

Analyzing Salience and Balance

1. Identify what grabs attention, such as a word, an image, a sound, or a structure.
2. Identify how that element is emphasised through repetition, highlighting, or contrast.
3. Analyse how the rest of the text responds by balancing it with tone, imagery, or structure.
4. Explain the emotional or thematic effect, such as harmony, tension, drama, or subtlety.
