IB English A Lang & Lit Hyperbole Notes

Hyperbole: Deliberate Exaggeration for Effect

1. Writers use it to create strong impressions, express emotion, or achieve comic effect.

Hyperbole in Literature: Emotion Beyond Realism

(Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare): “The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars.”

1. He exaggerates Juliet’s beauty so much that even the stars look dull in comparison.
2. This kind of hyperbole conveys emotional intensity, where feelings are overwhelming and everything seems larger than life.

(To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee): “He was as old as the hills.”

1. Scout does not mean the man is literally ancient. The exaggeration reflects her perspective as a child narrator.
2. The exaggeration also establishes her narrative voice.

Hyperbole in Film and TV

(Donkey’s dialogue, Shrek): “We can stay up late, swap manly stories, and in the morning, I’m making waffles!”

1. Donkey’s plans are wildly exaggerated for a character he has just met.
2. Hyperbole here amplifies personality and creates instant humour.

Hyperbole on Social Media

“I LITERALLY cannot even.”
“Best day of my LIFE.”
“This class is killing me.”

1. Hyperbole on social media is about quick emotional shorthand.
2. People exaggerate to express how intense something feels, whether excitement or frustration.

How to Identify Hyperbole

1. Exaggerated: does the statement seem over the top? If so, it is likely hyperbole.
2. Non-literal: hyperbole is not meant literally. It is used for effect.
3. Emotional: does it emphasise a point or emotion? Hyperbole often highlights something important or felt intensely.

Hyperbole vs. Other Figures of Speech

1. Simile and Metaphor: These compare two things, often using "like" or "as" (simile) or stating one thing is another (metaphor). Hyperbole exaggerates without direct comparison.
2. Personification: This gives human traits to non-human things. Hyperbole exaggerates actions or qualities.
3. Irony: This involves saying the opposite of what is meant. Hyperbole exaggerates to make a point.

Hyperbole in Visual Media

1. Hyperbole is not limited to words.
2. It also appears in visual media like cartoons and advertisements.

Example

• In this viral ad, a mascara wand the size of a building appears to brush a real bus with giant lashes.
• Inside the Tube station, trains emerge from a tunnel wearing enormous false eyelashes.
• This is visual hyperbole: making objects ridiculously oversized to dramatize the product’s power.

Hyperbole in Persuasive Writing & Ads

1. “This deal will change your life.” (Used in ads and product pages)
   1. The writer does not mean it literally, but wants the audience to believe the product is that good.
   2. It creates anticipation and excitement, encouraging impulse buying.
2. “The most important election in history.” (Used in political speeches and campaigns)
   1. Not every election can be the most important, but this hyperbole creates urgency and moral pressure to act.
3. “Our toothpaste gives you the brightest smile on Earth!” (Used in product packaging or TV ads)
   1. This exaggeration makes the product seem world-changing, even though it is just toothpaste.
   2. It combines confidence and memorable phrasing.
