Lenin's Charismatic Authority

1. Lenin was a trained Marxist intellectual whose theoretical writings gave him authority within the Bolshevik Party before 1917
2. His pamphlet What Is To Be Done? (1902) argued that a disciplined vanguard party must lead the revolution rather than wait for spontaneous worker action
3. Lenin's revolutionary credentials - years of exile, arrest, and clandestine organisation - enhanced his legitimacy among followers
4. His oratory was forceful and direct rather than eloquent - he used short slogans like "Peace, Land, Bread" to mobilise mass support
5. The April Theses (1917) demonstrated his ability to shift party direction through sheer force of argument and ideological conviction
6. Weber's concept of charismatic authority applies to Lenin - his power rested on personal qualities rather than formal office or tradition
7. Lenin dominated the Sovnarkom (Council of People's Commissars) through personal authority, not constitutional power
8. His willingness to adapt theory to circumstances - such as the October Revolution against orthodox Marxist timing - reinforced his image as a decisive revolutionary leader

The Cult of Lenin

1. The cult of Lenin was largely constructed by the party, not by Lenin himself - he reportedly disliked personal glorification
2. After the 1918 assassination attempt by Fanny Kaplan, the party intensified propaganda portraying Lenin as a martyr-like figure
3. Lenin's death in January 1924 triggered the embalming of his body and display in the Lenin Mausoleum on Red Square - against his family's wishes
4. Petrograd was renamed Leningrad in 1924, turning the city itself into a monument to the leader's legacy
5. Party-produced iconography depicted Lenin as wise, paternal, and visionary - posters, busts, and portraits spread across the USSR
6. Stalin exploited the cult by positioning himself as Lenin's faithful disciple - the phrase "the Lenin of today" became a key Stalinist slogan
7. The Lenin Enrolment (1924) recruited over 200,000 new party members, using reverence for the dead leader to expand and control the party
8. Unlike Stalin's later personality cult, Lenin's cult was built primarily posthumously and served collective party interests rather than one man's power

Propaganda and the Press
