Lenin’s Authoritarian Control: Aims and Results

Aims

Consolidate Bolshevik power after October 1917 by eliminating rivals (Mensheviks, SRs, liberals).
Suppress counter-revolution during Civil War (1918–1921).
Create a one-party state guided by Marxist-Leninist ideology.
Control society through propaganda, censorship, and terror.
Maintain unity within the Party by banning factionalism (1921).

Note

Lenin justified authoritarianism as “dictatorship of the proletariat,” but in practice it became dictatorship of the party.
Civil War context gave Lenin the excuse to use extraordinary measures.
By his death (1924), he had created the foundations of a one-party, centralized, authoritarian state.
