Social and Cultural Change: Identity, Education, and Chicanismo

1. The cultural achievements of the Chicano movement are among its most lasting. Before the 1960s, Mexican Americans faced systematic pressure to assimilate, abandon Spanish, Americanize their names, and distance themselves from indigenous and Mexican heritage.
