Imperial Preference (Ottawa Agreements)
A system of preferential tariff rates negotiated at the British Commonwealth Imperial Economic Conference in Ottawa in 1932, giving Commonwealth countries preferential access to each other's markets. Canada gained preferred access to British markets for wheat and lumber in exchange for British manufactured goods entering Canada at lower rates.
Judicial Committee of the Privy Council
The highest court of appeal for Canada until 1949 (when the Supreme Court of Canada took over), based in London. It ruled in 1937 that most of Bennett's New Deal reforms were unconstitutional as they encroached on provincial jurisdiction under the BNA Act.
