Stalin Built a Cult of Personality by Rewriting History and Controlling Culture

Constructing the Leader

1. The cult was a managed political project, not spontaneous adoration. By the early 1930s, Stalin's image appeared on posters, murals, and public buildings across the USSR, presenting him simultaneously as Lenin's true heir, the infallible guide of the party, the wise father of the Soviet peoples, and the defender of socialism against its enemies.
2. The Soviet past was rewritten to inflate Stalin's role. Historians and party officials gave Stalin a larger part in the 1917 revolution and the Civil War, systematically diminishing the roles of purged rivals. His own works were treated as authoritative texts alongside Lenin's.

Socialist Realism and the Short Course

1. Socialist realism became the only acceptable artistic doctrine in 1934. It required all art, literature, and film to celebrate the party and its leader, depicting reality in its "revolutionary development" with heroic, positive characters. Abstract art, pessimism, and modernism were forbidden.
2. The Short Course (1938) became the mandatory textbook of Soviet history. Written under Stalin's direct supervision, it presented a falsified narrative in which Stalin featured as Lenin's closest ally from the start. Photographs were retouched to remove executed rivals, and encyclopaedia entries were literally overwritten as prominent figures were arrested.
3. Artists who failed to comply paid a heavy price. Expulsion from professional organizations, and therefore from a livelihood, arrest, or worse followed noncompliance with socialist realism's demands.

Stalin and the Memory of Lenin

1. Stalin took control of Lenin's funeral and memory after his death in January 1924. He organized the funeral with himself in a central role, while telling Trotsky he could not return in time to attend. Lenin's body was embalmed and placed in a mausoleum on Red Square that became the symbolic center of Soviet power.
2. Stalin promoted "Leninism" as official doctrine and positioned himself as its sole authoritative interpreter, presenting Trotsky and other rivals as deviators from it.
3. By the late 1930s, Stalin's own writings were placed alongside Lenin's as essential texts. The documentary record of Lenin's doubts about Stalin (expressed in his Testament) was suppressed. Children learned in school that Stalin and Lenin had built the revolution together, and images of the two leaders side by side were ubiquitous.

The Propaganda Machine: Agitprop, Pravda, and Mass Media

1. The party's Agitprop departments coordinated a small set of central themes and slogans that local officials adapted for factories, farms, schools, and public meetings, repeating them across newspapers, radio, posters, and film until state claims became part of daily life.
   1. Pravda served as the party's leading newspaper, radio reached communal listening points even where private receivers stayed rare, and mobile projection teams brought cinema to communities without permanent cinemas, extending the reach of political messaging into the countryside.

The Cult in Public Space: Birthdays and Toponyms

1. Stalin's fiftieth birthday in 1929 produced a major wave of praise, portraits, and public declarations, and his sixtieth birthday in 1939 brought even larger celebrations, confirming the cult as a central public institution.
   1. Cities, factories, streets, and collective farms took Stalin's name across the Soviet Union, and propaganda extended the title "Father of Nations" across the USSR's many peoples, making personal leadership appear inseparable from the Soviet system itself.

Censorship: Glavlit and 'Formalism'

1. The state censorship body Glavlit prevented publication of material that challenged official policy or reputation, and writers and editors learned to anticipate its demands because an unacceptable work could end a career or lead to arrest.
   1. In 1932 the state dissolved independent artistic groupings and brought writers, painters, and composers under centralised professional unions. Officials condemned "formalism" whenever art appeared too experimental, complex, or detached from mass audiences, using the charge to police compliance with socialist realism.

Ritual and Everyday Participation

1. May Day and Revolution Day parades displayed disciplined crowds, military power, and economic achievements, while factory meetings had workers formally approve resolutions praising leaders or condemning alleged enemies, and staged elections offered public campaigning and celebration without any real choice between competing parties.
   1. Ordinary citizens wrote letters and sent gifts addressed to Stalin, seeking help while also reinforcing his image as the final source of justice. Historian Sarah Davies used popular opinion reports to show that this public conformity masked a real mixture of support, doubt, hostility, and quiet adaptation beneath the surface.
