Definition

Demilitarised zone (DMZ)

A strip of land from which military forces have been withdrawn. The Korean DMZ is a 4 km-wide buffer zone running roughly along the 38th parallel, separating North and South Korea. It was established by the 1953 armistice and remains one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world.
