The Role of Ideas: Sinicizing Marxism for China

From May Fourth to Marxism: Mao's Ideological Formation

1. The May Fourth Movement of 1919, a wave of nationalist protest against foreign influence and China's own weak, divided government, paved the way for the emergence of the Chinese Communist Party.
2. The CCP was formally founded in Shanghai in 1921, led by Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao, with an original membership of just 57 people represented by 12 founding delegates.
3. The Russian Comintern actively encouraged the CCP's formation and sent agents to China to help organise the new party from its earliest days.

4. Mao rejected this dismissal outright, arguing that China's rural masses were fully capable of overthrowing feudalism and building a socialist society themselves.
5. Because roughly 80 percent of China's population were peasants, Mao concluded they represented the genuine engine of Chinese revolution rather than an obstacle standing in its way.
6. This reversal of Marxist class priorities, placing the peasantry rather than urban workers at the centre of revolutionary change, was Mao's single most significant theoretical innovation.

5. In practice, this mass line approach meant the CCP maintained far closer contact with peasant communities than its nationalist rival, the GMD, ever managed to achieve.
