US and Viet Cong Tactics: Search and Destroy, Bombing, and Guerrilla Warfare

Search-and-destroy and attrition

1. US ground forces used helicopter mobility to locate Viet Cong and North Vietnamese units in contested rural areas, a tactic known as search and destroy. Air assault units could be inserted quickly, engage, and withdraw before communist forces could concentrate against them. The approach appeared to be vindicated at the Battle of Ia Drang (November 1965), the first major clash between US and North Vietnamese regular forces, which reinforced American confidence in air mobility and firepower.
2. General William Westmoreland pursued a strategy of attrition, aiming to inflict losses faster than communist forces could replace them, using body counts as the main measure of progress. Between 1966 and 1967, repeated search-and-destroy operations pursued this goal, but communist commanders generally chose when and where to fight, avoiding battles in which US firepower was decisive and accepting heavy losses to sustain a protracted war.

Bombing campaigns

1. Operation Rolling Thunder (1965-1968) subjected North Vietnam to sustained US bombing intended to destroy its industrial capacity and interdict the flow of troops and supplies south. Political restrictions on targets, together with North Vietnamese air defences and Soviet and Chinese support, limited the campaign's strategic effect.
2. The Ho Chi Minh Trail, the network of routes through Laos and Cambodia used to move troops and supplies south, proved difficult to close by air power alone. Repair teams, camouflage and dispersed routes allowed traffic to continue despite heavy bombing. In 1972, Operations Linebacker I and Linebacker II applied concentrated air power against North Vietnam during the Easter Offensive and the final stage of peace negotiations.

Chemical warfare and civilian impact

1. Agent Orange and other herbicides were sprayed across millions of hectares of forest and farmland under Operation Ranch Hand (1961-1971) to remove jungle cover and destroy crops that could feed communist forces. The chemicals also caused long-term health damage among Vietnamese civilians and US veterans through exposure to dioxin.
2. Free-fire zones, areas in which anyone present was treated as a legitimate target, and the forced relocation of villagers blurred the distinction between combatants and civilians. This environment contributed to the My Lai massacre (16 March 1968), in which US soldiers killed between 347 and 504 unarmed villagers in Son My hamlet. The killings were not made public until November 1969, when they severely damaged the moral standing of the US war effort at home and abroad.

Guerrilla warfare and pacification

1. The Viet Cong relied on guerrilla tactics, including ambushes, mines, extensive tunnel networks such as those at Cu Chi, and intelligence drawn from sympathetic villagers. This allowed small units to avoid direct confrontation with superior US firepower while sustaining a long war of attrition against South Vietnamese and American forces.
2. US and South Vietnamese pacification programmes, including the Civil Operations and Revolutionary Development Support (CORDS) structure created in 1967, tried to secure villages and extend government authority into the countryside. The CIA-coordinated Phoenix Programme targeted the Viet Cong's political and logistical infrastructure directly, but corruption and coercion in its implementation limited South Vietnamese public trust in the government it was meant to strengthen.
3. The Tet Offensive (January 1968) tested both approaches directly. Coordinated Viet Cong and North Vietnamese attacks on more than 100 cities and towns were repelled with heavy communist losses, yet the scale of the assault discredited earlier US claims that victory was near, showing that tactical defeat could still produce significant strategic and political effect.
