'Trading Space for Time': GMD Retreat and CCP Expansion

1. China's two main political forces responded to Japan's invasion with fundamentally different military strategies, and those strategies shaped the post-war balance of power as decisively as any battlefield outcome.
2. Jiang Jieshi's 'trading space for time' (yishang huan) strategy accepted massive territorial losses in exchange for preserving the GMD army.
3. When Japan advanced, Chinese forces retreated, abandoning cities, sacrificing territory, but keeping the army intact to fight another day. The GMD capital moved from Nanjing (captured December 1937) to Wuhan (captured October 1938) and finally to Chongqing in the interior, beyond the practical reach of Japanese forces.
4. Jiang calculated that Japan could not sustain a protracted war in a country as large as China.
5. Once the United States entered the war (December 1941), he largely stopped conducting offensive operations, waiting for the Americans to defeat Japan in the Pacific. This saved Chinese lives but also allowed Japan to consolidate control of eastern China for four years.

CCP Guerrilla Expansion Behind Japanese Lines

1. While the GMD retreated westward, the CCP took the opposite approach: it advanced into Japanese-occupied territory, establishing guerrilla base areas behind enemy lines.
2. This was tactically dangerous but politically transformative. The CCP became, in Japanese-occupied areas, the organisation that was actually fighting. That contrast with GMD passivity built the CCP's national credentials.
3. Between 1937 and 1945, the CCP's armed forces grew from approximately 92,000 to over 900,000 troops.
4. Its base areas expanded across northern China, with guerrilla networks reaching into rural areas of Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, and Jiangsu. The CCP governed an estimated 100 million people by 1945 in these base areas.

Over 400,000 PLA troops attacked Japanese rail lines and supply depots across northern China simultaneously. 1. Trading space for time reflected the GMD's material disadvantage. Retreat preserved parts of the army and drew Japanese forces deeper inland, but it also exposed civilians and major economic regions to occupation.
2. Conventional battles demonstrated national resistance and imposed costs on Japan. They also produced severe GMD casualties that could not easily be replaced.
