Mao Reasserts Ideological Authority, 1962-1976

1. After the Great Leap Forward's disaster, Mao lost significant influence over day-to-day economic management. Leaders such as Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping pushed a pragmatic recovery, and Mao increasingly feared that the party itself was taking a "capitalist road".
2. The Socialist Education Movement of the early 1960s targeted corruption and weak rural revolutionary commitment. Mao's belief that bureaucratic "revisionism" required continuing revolution formed the immediate prehistory to the Cultural Revolution.
3. A cult of personality built around Mao on a vast scale. The Little Red Book circulated his quotations everywhere, while portraits, songs and loyalty rituals presented him as the supreme revolutionary authority and made personal devotion a test of political reliability.
4. The May 16 Notification of 1966 warned that "bourgeois representatives" had infiltrated the party. The Cultural Revolution Group gained real influence over policy, and campaign politics increasingly displaced normal institutional procedure.
5. Students formed Red Guard groups and attacked the "Four Olds": old customs, culture, habits and ideas. Teachers, officials and intellectuals faced struggle sessions and violence as Mao encouraged rebellion while rival factions each claimed to represent his true line.

1. Red Guard organisations soon split over local leaders and revolutionary status. Competition escalated into armed clashes in several cities, showing that the movement could not be controlled through ideology alone.
2. The purge reached the top of the party. Liu Shaoqi was removed, imprisoned, and died in custody in 1969; Deng Xiaoping was purged and sent away from central power. The campaign destroyed careers and stripped the government of administrative expertise.
3. The PLA restored order in many areas from 1967 onward. Revolutionary committees combined military officers, cadres and mass representatives, though reliance on the army openly contradicted the claim that this had been a spontaneous mass movement.
4. Millions of urban young people were sent to the countryside under the "sent-down youth" policy. It dispersed the Red Guards and promoted ideological remoulding, but it also disrupted education and careers on a national scale.
5. Mao died in September 1976 and the Gang of Four, led by his wife Jiang Qing, was arrested within weeks. Later party judgement described the Cultural Revolution as a "grave setback", leaving trauma, lost education and deep distrust of mass campaigns.

Overall Judgement

1. Historians disagree about whether the Cultural Revolution was mainly Mao's personal struggle for renewed power or a wider social upheaval that escaped anyone's control. Both readings agree it devastated party institutions, education and expertise for a decade, at enormous human cost.
