Marginalised Women: Race, Class, and the Limits of Mainstream Feminism

1. The feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s made real gains, but those gains were not shared equally.
   1. When you look beyond the headlines, you find that mainstream feminism largely served a narrow group: white, educated, middle-class women.
   2. African American women, working-class women, and lesbian women fought on multiple fronts at once, often without support from the broader movement.

The White Middle-Class Problem

1. Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique (1963) described the frustration of educated women trapped in suburban domesticity.
   1. That frustration was real, but it was specific.
   2. The "problem with no name" was not the experience of Black women, Chicana women, or working-class women who had always worked outside the home out of economic necessity.
2. When the National Organization for Women (NOW) was founded in 1966, its priorities reflected this same demographic: professional equality, equal pay, and the Equal Rights Amendment.
   1. These were meaningful goals, but they addressed barriers faced primarily by women who already had education and professional access.
3. For a Black domestic worker or a Chicana factory hand, breaking the glass ceiling in corporate America was not an immediate concern.
   1. The movement's framing of women's oppression as a single, shared experience left these women's specific struggles largely invisible.

Black Feminism

1. This intellectual lineage started well before the Combahee River Collective’s 1977 statement.
   1. In 1969, Frances Beal, a member of SNCC's Black Women's Liberation Committee, published the essay "Double Jeopardy: To Be Black and Female", naming the compounded discrimination Black women faced from both racism and sexism years before the word "intersectionality" existed.
2. Beal's essay circulated through activist networks and helped build the intellectual groundwork that later Black feminist organising drew on.

1. African American women were active in both the civil rights movement and the feminist movement, yet found themselves marginalised in both.
   1. In the civil rights movement, women were often expected to follow male leadership.
   2. In mainstream feminism, their distinct experiences of racial discrimination were treated as secondary.

1. Within NOW itself, Aileen Hernandez, an African American civil rights activist, served as NOW's second president from 1970.
   1. Her presence highlighted the tension between the organisation's stated commitment to all women and its predominantly white leadership culture.
2. In 1973, Black women formed their own organisation.
   1. The National Black Feminist Organization (NBFO) was founded to address the combined effects of racism and sexism that mainstream feminism did not adequately confront.
   2. The NBFO created space for Black women to articulate a feminist politics centred on their own lives.

1. The ideas articulated by the Combahee River Collective were later given a formal name.
   1. In 1989, legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term intersectionality to describe how overlapping social identities create compounding forms of discrimination that cannot be understood by examining any single category alone.

Working-Class Women and Labour

1. Working-class women had a different set of priorities from middle-class feminists.
   1. While organisations like NOW focused on the ERA and professional advancement, working-class women were more immediately concerned with wages, safe working conditions, affordable childcare, and union rights.
2. In 1974, union women founded the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) to bridge the gap between the labour movement and the feminist movement.
   1. CLUW pushed unions to take women's workplace issues seriously, and pushed feminist organisations to engage with labour politics.
3. CLUW also worked to increase women’s representation in union leadership, which had historically been dominated by men even in industries where women made up a large share of the workforce.
4. One of the most vivid examples of working-class women's activism was the Farah strike.
   1. Beginning in 1972, Chicana garment workers at the Farah Manufacturing Company in El Paso, Texas walked out over unsafe conditions, poverty wages, and the company’s refusal to recognise their union.
5. The Farah strike lasted nearly two years.
   1. It drew national support through a consumer boycott and highlighted the specific vulnerabilities of Chicana workers, who faced exploitation on the basis of ethnicity, gender, and class simultaneously.
   2. The strike ended in a union victory in 1974.
6. Working-class women organised around concrete economic demands.
   1. Their feminism was inseparable from questions of labour rights, immigration status, and racial identity.
   2. This did not fit neatly into the agenda of mainstream feminist organisations.

Lesbian and Bisexual Women

1. Lesbian women faced marginalisation not only from mainstream American society but from within the feminist movement itself.
   1. Betty Friedan famously referred to lesbian feminists as the "lavender menace" in 1969, warning that association with lesbian activists would damage NOW’s public image and derail the broader cause.
2. In response, lesbian feminists organised independently.
   1. In 1970, the Radicalesbians published "The Woman Identified Woman," a manifesto arguing that lesbianism was a political as well as a personal identity, and that feminism required confronting compulsory heterosexuality.
3. Over the course of the 1970s, attitudes within the mainstream feminist movement shifted.
   1. NOW formally endorsed lesbian rights in 1971, though tensions remained.
   2. The shift was partly due to persistent pressure from lesbian activists who refused to accept that their sexuality was irrelevant to feminist politics.
4. The homophobia within feminism mirrored broader societal prejudice.
   1. Lesbian and bisexual women were asking the movement to practise the inclusion it preached.
   2. Their gradual, partial integration into mainstream feminism was a measure of how much had changed, and how much had not.
5. The Combahee River Collective's explicit inclusion of sexuality alongside race, class, and gender was significant precisely because other feminist organisations had avoided this connection.
   1. It represented a more complete theory of women's oppression.
6. By the end of the 1970s, the feminist movement had produced important legal and political changes.
   1. But those changes were uneven.
   2. For many African American, working-class, and lesbian women, the period's gains were partial at best.
   3. Their activism expanded what feminism could mean, even when the mainstream movement was slow to catch up.
