Experiences of Marginalized Groups: Egypt's Jewish and Coptic Communities

Egypt's Jewish Community Before 1952

1. Jewish communities had lived in Egypt continuously since at least 322 BCE, making them one of the country's oldest religious minorities.
2. The community grew significantly after 1517, when Egypt became part of the Ottoman Empire and attracted Jewish migration from across the Mediterranean and Middle East.
3. By 1850, Egypt's Jewish population numbered around 6,500, and it had grown to roughly 80,000 by 1948.
4. For most of this period, the Jewish community coexisted relatively peacefully with the rest of Egyptian society, maintaining its own schools, hospitals, and synagogues.
5. Jewish Egyptians also contributed significantly to the country's commercial and professional economy throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

4. A legal requirement to state religion on personal identity cards also affected Copts, making religious identity an unavoidable, state-recorded fact of daily bureaucratic life.
5. Beyond these religion-specific measures, other reforms affected wealthier Copts in broadly the same way they affected wealthy Muslims of similar economic status.
6. Wealthier Coptic landowners lost land under the same Agrarian Reform Laws that redistributed property from large Muslim landowners.
7. Wealthier Coptic industrialists saw their businesses nationalised under the same socialist decrees that targeted Muslim-owned firms in banking, industry, and trade.
8. Lower-income Copts, like their Muslim counterparts, generally benefited from the same expanded education, healthcare, and land redistribution programmes described elsewhere in this unit.
9. Coptic monasteries and church-run charitable institutions generally continued operating with only limited direct state interference during Nasser's rule.
10. This relative institutional continuity is one reason historians distinguish the Coptic experience under Nasser from the far more disruptive experience of Egypt's Jewish community during the same years.

Nasser Compared to Sadat: A Note on Precision

1. Historians generally agree that Nasser's policies affected Copts unevenly, combining a small number of specifically discriminatory measures with broader reforms that treated Copts much like other Egyptians of similar economic status.
2. The most severe and systematic discrimination against Egypt's Coptic community developed under Nasser's successor, Anwar al-Sadat, after 1970, rather than under Nasser himself.
3. As Sadat's regime increasingly sought to appease Islamist political currents, Copts became more frequently targeted both officially and through unofficial social pressure.
4. In times of political or economic crisis under Sadat and later leaders, Copts were often more easily identified and targeted as scapegoats than the Muslim majority.
5. These later sentiments were sometimes encouraged, or at least not effectively prevented, by state media and the ruling party of the period.
