Experiences of Marginalized Groups during the Second World War

African American Service and Segregation

1. More than one million African Americans served. The armed forces remained officially segregated through the war.
2. Most Black troops began in support units. Racial assumptions restricted combat assignments, training, promotion, and access to specialist roles.
3. The Tuskegee Airmen challenged stereotypes. Black pilots and ground crews demonstrated skill while serving within a segregated military program.
