IRI (Institute for Industrial Reconstruction)
The Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale, created by Mussolini's government in January 1933 in response to the Great Depression. When major Italian banks and industrial firms faced collapse, the IRI bought their shares and took them into state ownership. By the late 1930s, IRI owned major parts of the steel, telephone, shipping, and banking sectors, making Italy one of the most state-directed economies in Europe outside the USSR. The IRI was not ideologically planned but was a pragmatic response to crisis; it nonetheless moved Italy significantly toward a mixed economy and became a model for post-war Italian industrial policy.
