War damage and reconstruction: Uneven recovery in divided societies

1. The Korean War destroyed much of the Korean peninsula's infrastructure.
2. US airpower delivered more bombs on Korea than had been dropped in the entire Pacific theatre of the Second World War.
3. North Korea bore the heaviest destruction: US bombing reduced most northern cities to rubble and destroyed virtually all of the industrial infrastructure built during Japanese colonialism.

1. South Korea's economy was also shattered. The constant movement of frontlines through agricultural land, and the destruction of factories, roads, and ports, left the southern economy dependent on US aid.
2. By 1953, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world, with GDP per capita lower than many sub-Saharan African states. Reconstruction took different paths.
3. The United States provided South Korea with substantial economic and military aid throughout the 1950s. Park Chung-hee's government from 1961 launched export-led industrialisation that would eventually transform South Korea into an economic powerhouse.
4. North Korea received Soviet and Chinese reconstruction assistance and rebuilt its industrial base faster than the South in the 1950s, but its centrally planned economy stagnated from the 1970s onward. Japan's economy benefited substantially from the Korean War.
5. US military procurement, including vehicles, ammunition, and supplies manufactured in Japan, injected billions of dollars into the Japanese economy and restarted industrial production that had been suppressed under post-war occupation restrictions.

Economic and environmental destruction and reconstruction: Evidence, Outcomes, and Limits

1. The war destroyed transport and urban infrastructure. Railways, bridges, roads, ports, power systems, factories, and housing became repeated military targets.
2. Northern cities experienced extensive bombing. The US-led air campaign damaged industrial centres, transport networks, dams, and urban settlements.
3. Southern industry also suffered occupation and combat. Seoul, factories, communications, and agricultural markets faced repeated disruption.
4. Agriculture lost labour, animals, tools, and irrigation. Mines, unexploded weapons, burned fields, and displacement reduced production.
5. Environmental damage crossed the peninsula. Bombing, deforestation, flooding, damaged dams, and contaminated land altered local ecosystems.
6. The armistice left separate economic systems. North and South rebuilt with different institutions, allies, and development priorities.
7. North Korea received Soviet and Chinese assistance. Aid restored industry, housing, transport, and energy under central planning.
8. The north prioritised heavy industry. Early reconstruction produced rapid growth but concentrated resources in state-directed sectors.
9. South Korea depended heavily on American aid. Food, fuel, materials, finance, and technical support stabilised the post-war economy.
10. Aid also created political and economic tensions. Import dependence, allocation, corruption, and disputes over exchange rates complicated reconstruction.
11. Land reform shaped the southern countryside. Redistribution before and during the war weakened landlord power and widened smallholding.
12. Refugee movement changed labour markets. Displaced people expanded cities, informal trade, low-wage work, and demand for housing.
13. Military spending remained central. Both states devoted large resources to defence because the armistice did not end the conflict.
14. Reconstruction strengthened state authority. Governments used planning, aid distribution, policing, and mobilisation to shape daily life.
15. War damage influenced later divergence without determining it alone. Policy, foreign aid, institutions, leadership, and global markets shaped subsequent development.
