Discussion Skills: Mastering the IO Conversation

The Importance of the Discussion
1. The IO (Internal Assessment) includes a conversation part to test if you can listen and react naturally.
2. Unlike the presentation, you do not control the questions in die Diskussion (the discussion).
3. This is your best chance to show you are a confident speaker in German ab initio.
4. You should aim to be flexible and use the vocabulary you have learned.

Active Listening: Understanding the Examiner

Listen Carefully to Follow-up Questions
1. The examiner wants to see dein Verständnis (your understanding) of the topic.
2. If you rush, you might give an irrelevante Antwort (irrelevant answer).
3. Listening closely shows respect and helps you answer the specific question asked.
4. It is okay to take a second to think before you speak.
5. Stille ist in Ordnung (Silence is okay) because it shows you are thinking about your German.

Tip

If you do not understand a question, use a polite phrase to ask for help.
Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? (Can you please repeat that?).
Ich verstehe das Wort ... nicht (I do not understand the word ...).

Example

Prüfende Person (Examiner): Warum ist das wichtig für die Umwelt? (Why is that important for the environment?).
Kandidat/in (Student): Ich denke, es ist wichtig, weil wir die Natur schützen müssen. (I think it is important because we must protect nature).

Structure Your Answers
1. Strong answers in German ab initio have different layers.
2. A one-sentence answer is often too short for a high mark.
