Prose non-fiction

A literary form that presents factual or reflective content through continuous prose, using techniques such as voice, structure, and rhetorical strategies to inform, argue, or explore real events and ideas.

Explore, interpret, and reflect: prose non-fiction is written to do all three, not simply to record.
The author's purpose is usually to work through an experience or question in public, inviting the reader into the process of thinking.
Three overlapping purposes appear across most literary non-fiction: to bear witness to real experience, to find meaning in what resists easy explanation, and to move the reader toward a broader understanding by way of the particular.
Unlike autobiography, which typically aims to record a life, the personal essay aims to test an idea: it starts from an experience and asks what it means, often without arriving at a fixed answer.
