Definition

Opinion column

A text in which a named writer presents a personal argument on a current issue, using first person, rhetorical devices, and a distinctive voice to persuade or provoke the reader.

Headline: "We Don't Need Leaders Who Listen. We Need Leaders Who Act." The headline uses antithesis: "listen" vs "act". It rejects a value most readers assume is positive and replaces it with something more demanding, provoking the reader into engagement before the argument has even begun.
Opening accumulation: "Town halls are convened. Consultations are launched. Reports are commissioned, reviewed, and filed." The list builds a rhythm of bureaucratic repetition; the passive voice removes human responsibility; the tricolon accelerates the sense of waste.
Single-sentence paragraph: "And then, nothing changes." After the accumulation of the previous paragraph, this four-word sentence lands as a verdict: its brevity performs the failure it is describing.
