Identifying a Play Extract: Structural and Formal Markers

Definition

Play extract

A section of a dramatic text written primarily in dialogue and stage directions, designed for performance, in which meaning emerges through speech, action, and the interaction between characters.

Character names as headings: each speech is preceded by the speaking character's name, usually in capitals or bold, followed by a colon or the speech itself.
Dialogue as the main body: the text consists almost entirely of what characters say to each other, not narrative description.
Stage directions: instructions for performance appear in brackets, italics, or parentheses, such as (He crosses to the window), [PAUSE], (softly), indicating action, movement, tone, or setting.
Scene or act structure: extracts may be labelled with act and scene numbers (ACT II, SCENE 1) or a scene heading that locates the moment in the play's larger arc.
