Evolution of the internet and WWW
The internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) have evolved significantly over the years, transforming how we communicate, access information, and interact online.
Innovators and innovations in the early development of the internet and web
The early days of the internet (1969–2000)
ARPANET
- The internet originated in the 1960s as a project by the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET)
- It represented a network funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.
ARPANET was designed to connect research institutions and facilitate communication between computers.
TCP/IP Protocol
- In the 1970s, Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn developed the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- It became the foundation of the internet.
TCP/IP enabled different networks to communicate with each other, creating a network of networks.
HintTry to reflect on why TCP/IP was such a revolutionary development by revising it's functionality described in topic 3.4C.
World Wide Web (WWW)
- In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web.
- A system of interlinked hypertext documents accessible via the internet.
The WWW introduced concepts like webpages, URLs, and hyperlinks, making the internet more user-friendly.
