The Extended Essay (EE) is a compulsory component of the DP core.
Unlike laboratory sciences, the EE in psychology must rely on secondary sources, such as peer-reviewed research and theoretical models, rather than original experimentation.
This makes the essay a literature-based investigation that requires careful selection, evaluation, and integration of existing studies.
Undertaking an EE in Psychology helps students develop research skills, refine their ability to analyse arguments, and communicate ideas clearly.
Approximately 40 hours of independent work are expected in the process.
The EE in psychology is externally assessed against five criteria, which are outlined below.

Together with Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the EE can contribute up to three additional points to the overall Diploma score.
The total time allocated for supervision is between three and five hours, which includes informal check-ins and the three mandatory reflection sessions that are recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF).
They may indicate general areas that could be strengthened, but the responsibility for rewriting and improving rests with the student.

Proofreading and editing are the responsibility of the student.
Supervisors must respect academic integrity and ensure that all final work represents the student’s own effort.
The IB does not prescribe one specific reference style, but whichever style is used must be applied consistently.
References should include author, year, title, publication details, and for online sources, the access date and URL.
This may sound obvious, but it is important because extended essays that drift into other subjects are only assessed on their psychological content. This can result in lower marks being awarded.
It is acceptable to investigate a theme not directly covered in class, as long as it is firmly rooted in psychology and can be explored using academic sources.
Students should agree with their supervisor early on how they will keep and use their RRS.
