Fanon and the Core Theme: Being Human

1. Frantz Fanon's central contribution to the Core Theme is his demonstration that the question 'What does it mean to be human?' cannot be answered in the abstract. As argued throughout Black Skin, White Masks, the experience of being human is shaped by race, colonialism, and power.
   1. Any philosophy of human nature that ignores these realities is incomplete. Fanon provides an essential corrective to the abstract universalism that has dominated Western philosophy.
2. On the topic of identity (Unit 1.1), Fanon's analysis of racialized identity (10.4.1) shows that identity is not simply a matter of personal choice or inner reflection. The colonized person's identity is imposed from outside through the white gaze (10.4.2), colonial language (10.4.3), and systematic psychological conditioning (10.4.4).
3. This challenges individualist accounts of identity such as Locke's memory theory. For Locke, personal identity is constituted by psychological continuity: I am the same person as the one who performed an earlier action if I can remember performing it.
   1. This purely internal, individual account misses how identity is shaped by external social forces. Fanon's sociogeny (the idea that human identity is produced by society and history, not just the individual mind) (10.4.4) directly challenges Locke: identity is not self-constituted through memory but imposed through colonial structures.
4. Fanon's account of the self and the Other (Unit 1.2) transforms the philosophical discussion. Where Sartre analyzed the Other as a general feature of human consciousness (the "look" that objectifies), Fanon demonstrates that the racial Other experiences a qualitatively different form of objectification: being reduced to one's skin color, as explored in 10.4.2.

The consciousness theme (Unit 1.3) is enriched by Fanon's concept of the racial epidermal schema (the way a Black person's bodily self-awareness is distorted by how others see their skin) (10.4.4). Fanon shows that the colonized person's consciousness is not a transparent window onto the world but a fractured awareness (a sense of self split between one's own experience and a racist society's categorization of you).

Personhood, Nature, and Freedom

1. The mind-body problem (1.3.2) takes on new dimensions when the body is experienced primarily through the meanings imposed by a racist society.

On personhood (Unit 1.4), Fanon's work raises the question of whether genuine agency (the capacity to make real choices) (1.4.2) and moral responsibility (1.4.3) are possible under conditions of colonial domination. If the colonized person is 'overdetermined from without' (defined entirely by others' impositions, leaving no room for self-definition), what remains of their capacity for self-conscious action?
   1. Fanon's answer is that agency must be reclaimed through collective struggle, transforming the colonized person from passive object to active historical subject.
2. Fanon's engagement with human nature (Unit 1.5) is captured in his concept of sociogeny (the claim that what we are as human beings is shaped by society and history, not by biology alone) (10.4.4). This intervenes directly in the nature versus nurture debate (1.5.2) by showing that racial categories, though socially constructed, have real psychological and material effects on the people they label.
3. The freedom theme (Unit 1.6) is perhaps where Fanon's contribution is most powerful. His critique of existentialist freedom (10.4.5) shows that abstract claims about human freedom ring hollow when entire populations are denied the conditions for self-determination.
   1. The discussion of freedom and determinism (1.6.1) must account for the social conditioning (1.6.2) that colonialism produces, and Fanon's insistence on the structural dimensions of unfreedom.
4. Fanon's call for a new humanism (10.4.5) is ultimately a response to the Core Theme's deepest question: what does it mean to be authentically human? For Fanon, authenticity (1.6.3) is not an individual achievement but a collective project that requires the dismantling of structures that prevent colonized peoples from defining themselves on their own terms.
5. For IB Philosophy students, Fanon's work demonstrates that the Core Theme cannot be adequately explored without attending to race, power, and colonial history. Any answer to the question "What does it mean to be human?" that treats the European experience as universal is, in Fanon's terms, a form of false universalism that excludes the majority of humanity.
