Authoritarian control and the extent to which it was achieved

Taking into account everything you have been reading about Stalin’s power, it seems easy to label him as a successful totalitarian ruler.
He controlled politics, economy and also every aspect of daily life. Using Hannah Arendt’s framework on totalitarianism we can identify Stalin's regime as a quintessential example of totalitarian rule.
Totalitarianism is characterized by an all-encompassing ideology, a single mass party led by a charismatic leader, and the use of terror to control society. Under Stalin, the Communist Party became an instrument of total domination, with Stalin at its center, exercising unchecked power.
Arendt emphasizes the pervasive use of state terror, that in the case of Stalin was epitomized by the Great Purges and gulag system, as a means not just to eliminate opposition but to atomize society and eradicate spontaneity or dissent.
Stalin’s monopoly over information, the rewriting of history, and the cultivation of a personality cult further exemplify what Arendt saw as the totalitarian effort to reshape reality itself.
