Volksgemeinschaft - The People's Community

1. The Volksgemeinschaft (People's Community) was the Nazi ideal of a racially pure, socially unified German nation
2. Hitler aimed to overcome class divisions by replacing loyalty to class with loyalty to the Volk (race)
3. The concept drew on Social Darwinism - the belief that the Aryan race must struggle to survive and dominate
4. Gleichschaltung (coordination) brought all institutions under Nazi control to enforce ideological conformity
5. Jews, Roma, disabled people, and homosexuals were excluded by definition from the People's Community as racial outsiders
6. The regime promoted collective identity through rallies, uniforms, and shared rituals such as the Nuremberg Party rallies
7. The Winter Relief Programme (Winterhilfswerk) collected donations to aid the poor and reinforce community spirit
8. In practice, class inequality persisted - industrialists profited enormously while workers lost bargaining rights

Women and Family Policy

1. Nazi ideology confined women to Kinder, Kuche, Kirche (Children, Kitchen, Church) as their natural sphere
2. The Law for the Encouragement of Marriage (1933) offered loans to newlyweds if the wife left employment
3. The Mother's Cross (Mutterkreuz) awarded bronze, silver, and gold medals for bearing four, six, or eight children
4. The Lebensborn programme (1935) provided maternity homes for racially approved unmarried mothers
5. Women were discouraged from higher education and professions - female university enrolment was capped at 10% from 1933
6. The birth rate rose from 14.7 per thousand (1933) to 20.3 per thousand (1939), though economic recovery also contributed
7. By 1939, labour shortages forced the regime to recruit women back into factories, contradicting its own ideology
8. The Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring (1933) enforced compulsory sterilisation of around 400,000 people

Youth and the Hitler Youth

1. The Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend, HJ) aimed to indoctrinate boys aged 14-18 with Nazi ideology and military discipline
2. The League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Madel, BDM) trained girls for motherhood, domestic skills, and physical fitness
3. Membership became compulsory in 1936 under the Hitler Youth Law, and by 1939 over 8 million young people were enrolled
4. Activities included camping, sport, and paramilitary training - marching, map reading, and weapons drill for boys
5. The Jungvolk (ages 10-14) and Jungmadel (ages 10-14 girls) served as feeder organisations for the senior groups
6. Youth organisations deliberately undermined parental authority - children were encouraged to report disloyal family members
7. Many young people initially enjoyed the sense of belonging and adventure, though enthusiasm often faded as regimentation increased
8. By the war years, the HJ served as a recruitment pipeline for the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS, with boys as young as 16 sent to fight
