Tiananmen Square (1989): Democracy Movement and Military Crackdown

1. Economic reform under Deng Xiaoping expanded opportunity but also produced inflation, official corruption and rising inequality. Price reforms pushed inflation to roughly 28% in 1988, eroding urban living standards and fuelling public resentment against officials seen as profiting from their positions.
2. Students and intellectuals added political demands to these economic grievances, criticising the limits on political participation that persisted despite a decade of economic liberalisation. By the late 1980s, material and political frustrations had converged into a broad, if unfocused, reform constituency.
3. Hu Yaobang, the reformist party general secretary, had supported rehabilitation of Cultural Revolution victims and a more tolerant political climate. Conservative leaders forced his resignation in 1987 after he was blamed for tolerating earlier student protests; his sudden death on 15 April 1989 became the immediate trigger for public mourning that turned into political protest.
4. Students who gathered to mourn Hu quickly broadened their demands to include dialogue with the government, press freedom and action against corruption. The movement never had a single programme or unified leadership, and different groups disagreed over how far to press for democratic change versus more limited reform.
5. Large crowds occupied Tiananmen Square through April and May 1989, drawn partly by the square's symbolic visibility beside China's central party and government institutions. At its peak the protests drew an estimated one million people in Beijing and spread to more than 400 other Chinese cities.
6. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev visited Beijing in mid-May 1989 for the first Sino-Soviet summit in three decades. The visit brought international media to Beijing to cover the normalisation of Sino-Soviet relations, and their presence in the city amplified global coverage of the growing demonstrations.
7. On 13 May, students began a hunger strike in the square. The tactic generated public sympathy and intensified pressure on the leadership, but it also narrowed the room for compromise as the health of hunger strikers deteriorated under close media attention.
8. Workers in Beijing formed autonomous organisations independent of the official, party-controlled trade unions, raising economic complaints and demanding a voice in workplace decisions. Because the CCP claimed to rule in the name of the working class, independent worker mobilisation alarmed the leadership more than student protest alone.

1. Within the leadership, Zhao Ziyang, the party general secretary, favoured dialogue with the protesters, while premier Li Peng pushed for stronger measures to restore order. Deng Xiaoping, though holding no top formal title, ultimately backed the hardliners and endorsed a coercive restoration of order, and Zhao was removed from power as a result.
2. Martial law was declared on 20 May 1989. An initial attempt to move troops into central Beijing was blocked by residents who built barricades and appealed to soldiers directly, a failure that convinced the leadership to deploy forces prepared to use lethal force.
3. On the night of 3 to 4 June 1989, troops and tanks advanced into central Beijing and cleared Tiananmen Square by force. The death toll remains disputed, with estimates ranging from several hundred to several thousand killed in the city.
4. In the aftermath, authorities arrested student and worker activists, tightened media restrictions and purged officials who had shown sympathy for the protesters. Zhao Ziyang was placed under house arrest, where he remained until his death in 2005.
5. Public commemoration of the crackdown has been tightly controlled in mainland China ever since, with the events of 4 June excluded from textbooks and censored in media and online discussion. The crackdown ended the political reform track of Deng's programme and defined the limits of tolerated dissent in China for decades afterward.
