From Alliance to Rivalry

1. The 1950 Sino-Soviet Treaty created formal cooperation between the two communist powers, but disputes over aid, strategy and relative status persisted beneath the surface of the alliance from the start.
2. Khrushchev's denunciation of Stalin in 1956 struck Mao as a challenge to revolutionary authority in general. Their differing views of leadership widened the ideological tension between Moscow and Beijing.
3. The USSR promoted "peaceful coexistence" with the West, while Mao argued that imperialism remained fundamentally aggressive but also vulnerable. Disagreement over nuclear risk and revolutionary strategy divided the two parties further.

9. China had attended the Bandung Conference in 1955, where Zhou Enlai promoted sovereignty and peaceful coexistence with Asian and African states. These principles continued to aid Chinese diplomacy even though China was never formally part of the non-aligned movement.
10. Conflict with the USSR ultimately encouraged rapprochement with the United States. China used improving relations with Washington to balance growing Soviet pressure, and the split fundamentally transformed the structure of the global Cold War.

1. The Sino-Soviet split shows that shared communist ideology could not override national interest, personal rivalry and disputed leadership of the world revolutionary movement. Its consequences reshaped Chinese foreign policy for a generation, opening the path to both non-aligned diplomacy and the eventual opening to the United States.
