Chicanismo: Cultural Nationalism and Self-Determination

1. The Chicano movement was as much a cultural revolution as a political one.
   1. The ideology at its core was Chicanismo: a framework of ideas about identity, history, and self-determination that rejected assimilation and insisted on the value of Mexican American culture on its own terms.
2. One source was the concept of La Raza, popularised by Mexican philosopher José Vasconcelos in his 1925 essay La Raza Cósmica.
   1. Vasconcelos argued that the mixed indigenous, Spanish, and African heritage of Latin American peoples represented a new synthesis rather than a corruption.

2. LULAC promoted Americanism strategically. English education, voting, military service, and litigation presented members as loyal citizens entitled to equal treatment.
3. Assimilation carried both leverage and limits. It challenged claims of foreignness but could devalue Spanish, Mexican culture, migrant workers, Indigenous identity, or those without citizenship.

5. The American GI Forum used patriotic legitimacy. Héctor P. García framed unequal healthcare, burial, education, and benefits as betrayal of veterans.
6. Labour internationalism offered another tradition. Mexican, Filipino, Black, and white workers sometimes organized across nationality against growers and industrial employers.
7. Catholic social teaching supported dignity claims. Ideas of justice, family, labour rights, and moral responsibility influenced activists while church hierarchies varied in support.
8. Nonviolence shaped farmworker strategy. César Chávez drew on Catholic sacrifice, Gandhi, civil-rights activism, fasting, pilgrimage, boycott, and disciplined public witness.

10. Chicanismo rejected imposed inferiority. The term Chicano was reclaimed as a proud political identity rather than an insult or a request for acceptance as culturally white.
