The Nazi-Soviet Pact: Realpolitik Over Ideology

An ideological shock. The Non-Aggression Pact, signed 23 August 1939 by Foreign Ministers Joachim von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov, stunned the world. Nazism defined itself in explicitly anti-communist terms and Soviet propaganda identified Nazism as capitalism's most violent form. Yet the two regimes agreed not to attack each other.
The secret protocol. A secret protocol divided Eastern Europe: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and eastern Poland went to the Soviet sphere. Western Poland and Lithuania to the German sphere. Stalin also secured rights in Bessarabia (Romania). The existence of the secret protocol was denied by the Soviet government until 1989.
What each side gained. The pact gave Hitler what he needed: freedom to invade Poland without risking a two-front war, since the USSR would not intervene and would instead invade from the east and take its own share. For Stalin, it provided security against immediate German attack and territorial gains to create a buffer zone.

Blitzkrieg and Poland's collapse. Germany used Blitzkrieg tactics, concentrated armoured columns backed by close air support that penetrated Polish lines before they could reorganise. Warsaw fell on 27 September, and Poland was divided between Germany and the USSR. Around 65,000 Polish soldiers died in combat. Tens of thousands of officers, academics, and professionals were later murdered by Soviet forces in the Katyn massacre and related killings.
