Feminist Literature: The Books That Sparked a Movement

De Beauvoir and The Second Sex

1. Before the feminist movement gained momentum in the 1960s, a French philosopher had already laid out one of its foundational arguments.
   1. In 1949, Simone de Beauvoir published The Second Sex, a wide-ranging analysis of how women are defined, constrained, and diminished by society.
2. Her central argument was that gender is not a biological fact but a social construction.
   1. She expressed this in one of the most quoted lines in feminist thought: "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman."
   2. De Beauvoir argued that society teaches women to see themselves as secondary, as the "Other" defined against man's default norm.

Friedan and The Feminine Mystique

1. In 1963, Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique, which became one of the best-selling non-fiction books of the decade.
   1. It opened with a question: why were so many educated, suburban American women deeply unhappy despite having what society told them they should want?
2. Friedan called this unspoken dissatisfaction "the problem that has no name." She argued that the post-war ideal of the fulfilled housewife was a cultural myth, one that trapped women in domestic roles and cut them off from meaningful work and identity outside the home.
3. The book resonated widely.
   1. Friedan received thousands of letters from readers who said she had put into words what they had long felt but could not articulate.
   2. It directly contributed to the founding of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1966, with Friedan as its first president.
4. You should note, though, that Friedan's work had significant limitations.
   1. Her analysis was rooted almost entirely in the experience of white, college-educated, suburban women.
   2. She said little about working-class women, women of color, or those who had always worked out of necessity rather than choice.

Beyond the Mainstream

1. Not all influential feminist writing of the era came from the same angle as Friedan.
   1. In 1962, Helen Gurley Brown published Sex and the Single Girl, a book aimed at unmarried working women.
   2. Rather than mourning the constraints placed on women, Brown celebrated independence, career ambition, and sexuality outside of marriage.
2. Brown later became editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, which she transformed into a platform for this vision of female self-determination.
   1. Her approach was more individualist than political.
   2. She was not aligned with the organized feminist movement.
   3. Her writing nonetheless challenged the idea that a woman's worth was tied to marriage.
3. A more direct critique of the mainstream feminist movement came from bell hooks.
   1. Writing in the late 1970s and beyond, hooks argued that mainstream feminism as it was being practiced focused too narrowly on the concerns of white, privileged women.
   2. She insisted that you cannot separate gender from race and class when analyzing oppression.
   3. True liberation, she argued, had to address all of these systems together.
4. A third strand of feminist literature in this period focused not on work or identity, but on the body.
   1. In 1970, a collective of women in Boston produced a health guidebook that would become one of the most widely distributed feminist texts of the era.

1. Taken together, these texts show that feminist literature in this period was not a single unified voice.
   1. You had philosophical arguments about gender construction (de Beauvoir), emotional articulations of domestic discontent (Friedan), celebrations of independent womanhood (Brown), intersectional critiques (hooks), and grassroots health empowerment (Our Bodies, Ourselves).
   2. Each spoke to different women and different needs.

Limits of Early Feminist Literature

1. The Feminine Mystique reached a national audience, but its focus on white, middle-class suburban women did not represent the experiences of many Black and working-class women.
2. By the start of the 1970s, feminist writing had grown more radical and far more visible.
   1. Kate Millett's Sexual Politics (1970) argued that patriarchy functioned as a political system, reinforced through literature, family structure, and everyday relationships, not just through law.
   2. Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch (1970) challenged the sexual and social passivity expected of women and urged them to reject the domestic role outright.
3. Ms. magazine, launched in 1972 by Gloria Steinem and others, gave feminist ideas a permanent national platform and linked writing directly to campaigns for legal and political reform.
