Jiang Jieshi's Rise: From Whampoa to Nationalist China

1. Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek) was the dominant figure in Chinese politics from 1927 to 1949.
2. He was not the most ideologically creative leader the GMD produced, Sun Yixian held that role, but he was its most effective power broker.
3. He built his authority through the military, through strategic marriages, and through a combination of nationalism and authoritarian control.
4. Jiang was born in 1887 in Zhejiang province and trained at military academies in China and Japan.
