Marshall Plan: Economic Recovery and European Division

Economic Conditions After 1945

1. Europe faced destroyed transport, bombed cities, housing shortages, food shortages, and weak currencies after the Second World War.
2. Industrial output in many states remained below pre-war levels, so governments struggled to rebuild trade and employment.
3. European countries needed US goods but lacked enough dollars to buy imports, which made recovery dependent on American finance.
4. Economic hardship strengthened communist parties in France and Italy because they could link poverty to capitalist failure.
