From the Ryutin Platform to the First Show Trial: Stalin Turns Kirov's Murder Into a Weapon

The Kirov Assassination and Its Consequences (1932-1935)

1. In December 1932, a document circulated within the party that went further than any opposition paper had before. The Ryutin Platform, written by Martemyan Ryutin, a former Moscow party secretary, called for Stalin's removal in explicit terms, denouncing his collectivization policy as a criminal disaster. Stalin demanded that Ryutin be shot. The Politburo, which still included figures like Sergei Kirov, the Leningrad party boss, who were not willing to sanction such extreme measures against a party member, refused. Ryutin was expelled and imprisoned. Stalin's demand for execution had been blocked, a rare check on his power.
   1. Ryutin's clandestine group, the Union of Marxist-Leninists, remained small, and police soon discovered it. Ryutin received only a prison sentence in 1932, but he was executed during the Great Terror in 1937, when the constraints that had briefly protected him no longer existed.
   2. On December 1, 1934, Sergei Kirov was assassinated in his office at Leningrad party headquarters by Leonid Nikolayev. Kirov was one of the most popular and powerful figures in the party. His death was immediately seized upon by Stalin. Within hours, Stalin had personally drafted new legislation, the "December Laws," allowing the NKVD to arrest, try in secret, and execute suspects in "terrorist" cases without normal legal procedures. The speed with which this happened strongly suggests the legislation was prepared in advance.

The Defeat of the Right and the Path to the Congress of Victors

1. Rykov was removed as head of the Soviet government in 1930 and replaced by Vyacheslav Molotov, while Bukharin lost his leadership of the Communist International and Pravda around the same time, completing the defeat of the Right Opposition.
   1. Stalin's "Dizzy with Success" article of March 1930 blamed local officials for the very excesses of forced collectivization he had encouraged, producing a brief retreat before the policy resumed at speed. The famine of 1932-1933 that followed killed millions of people across the Soviet Union's major grain-producing regions.

1. The Seventeenth Party Congress of January-February 1934, officially called the "Congress of Victors", celebrated industrial achievement while delegates privately discussed the human costs of coercive policy. Later testimony indicated that Stalin received more negative votes than Kirov in the Congress's internal leadership elections, though the exact figures remain disputed because the relevant records were altered or destroyed.

Building the Case: The Preparation of the Show Trials

1. Between 1934 and 1936, the NKVD under Genrikh Yagoda and then Nikolai Yezhov built the cases for the public show trials. The process involved extensive interrogation, psychological pressure, and physical torture to extract confessions. The old Bolsheviks who would face trial had spent their careers in a political culture where confessing to errors and recanting publicly was an accepted form of political penance. Stalin and the NKVD exploited this tradition. Confessions were obtained not only by violence but by appeals to party loyalty: the accused were told their confessions were necessary for the party's survival.
   1. Zinoviev and Kamenev were arrested after the Kirov assassination and imprisoned. In 1936, they were brought to trial on charges of forming a "Trotskyite-Zinovievite Terrorist Centre" responsible for Kirov's murder and planning assassinations of other Soviet leaders, including Stalin. Facing the death penalty, and after receiving private assurances (later not honored) that their families would be protected, they confessed. Both were executed in August 1936 within hours of the verdict.
