The Role of Ideas: From Nationalism to Revolution

Nationalism and Anti-Imperialism

1. Nationalism and anti-imperialism sat at the very centre of Castro's revolutionary ideas, connecting powerfully with Cubans who resented decades of US economic and political influence.
2. Castro deliberately framed his own struggle as a direct continuation of Jose Marti's nineteenth century fight for Cuban independence from Spain.
3. By invoking Marti, Castro positioned himself as the leader of a renewed national liberation movement against what he described as neo-imperialist oppression.
4. This nationalist framing allowed Castro to appeal to Cubans across different social backgrounds who shared a common resentment of American economic dominance, regardless of their individual views on socialism.
5. Batista's own growing reliance on repression and violence reinforced this nationalist narrative, since many Cubans increasingly saw Castro as the only credible alternative to a US-backed dictatorship.
6. As opposition to Batista grew through the 1950s, Castro deliberately linked the fight for Cuban sovereignty to broader demands for social justice and economic reform.
7. This combination appeared clearly in the Moncada Programme, in Castro's explicit opposition to US economic dominance, and in his calls for greater opportunities for Black Cubans and women.
8. Anti-imperialism therefore functioned as the connective ideological thread linking Castro's later social and economic policies back to a much older Cuban nationalist tradition.

From Reform to Revolution: Castro's Early Political Formation

1. Fidel Castro was the son of Angel Castro y Argiz, a Spanish immigrant who had worked his way up from labouring to become a wealthy, self-made plantation owner.
2. Despite this relatively privileged background, Castro was drawn to the Ortodoxo party primarily for its social reform ideology rather than its cautious parliamentary strategy.
3. After publicly condemning government corruption and its ties to armed gangs in 1949, Castro briefly fled to the United States before returning to Cuba to complete his law studies in 1950.
4. Rather than accepting a high-status position offered through his wife's wealthy family, Castro and his friends opened a law practice in Old Havana, a low-income district of the capital.
5. Between 1950 and 1952, this practice barely covered its own rent while defending victimised workers, slum dwellers, detained students, and other poor clients.
6. Castro remained a vocal public critic of corruption within the Autentico government, particularly under President Prio, throughout this period.
7. Although he doubted whether parliamentary methods could achieve genuine change, Castro became increasingly involved in the Ortodoxo campaign for the 1952 elections, standing as a congressional candidate for two low-income districts.
8. He viewed participation in these elections as one possible step toward revolution rather than as an end in itself, believing lasting change would ultimately require more direct action.
9. This early combination of legal advocacy for the poor and growing disillusionment with electoral politics shaped the ideological direction Castro would take after Batista's 1952 coup.
10. When Batista's coup cancelled the 1952 elections Castro had been contesting, he responded by launching a legal challenge through the courts before eventually turning to direct action.

The Moncada Programme, 1953

1. Castro's failed attack on the Moncada Barracks on 26 July 1953 gave him an unexpected national platform when he and his surviving co-defendants were put on trial.
2. Castro used his own trial to deliver what became known as his manifesto, remembered as the History Will Absolve Me speech.
3. In this speech, Castro defined the people not as Cuba's comfortable and conservative classes but as the vast unredeemed masses who were, in his words, deceived and betrayed by all.
4. He closed his defence with the line that became permanently associated with his movement: condemn me, it does not matter, history will absolve me.
5. The trial also gave Castro the opportunity to set out a detailed vision for a new Cuba, known afterward as the Moncada Programme.
6. The programme's first Revolutionary Law promised to restore the progressive 1940 Cuban constitution that Batista's coup had suspended.
7. Its second law promised land reform, granting rights to those living, whether legally or illegally, on small plots of less than 165 acres.
8. Further laws promised industrial workers a 30 percent share of company profits and sugar workers a 55 percent share, directly targeting Cuba's two largest sources of wage labour.
9. A final law promised to confiscate the property of anyone convicted of corruption and use it to fund workers' pensions, schools, hospitals, and charities.
10. This combination of constitutional restoration, land reform, and profit sharing struck a genuine chord with Cuba's working classes and won Castro significant new support even in military defeat.
11. Fidel and Raul Castro were sentenced to 15 and 13 years' imprisonment respectively, a sentence intended to remove them permanently as a political threat.
12. A general amnesty in May 1955, granted under both domestic and international pressure, freed the Castro brothers well before their sentences were due to end.

1. Castro's own writings from this period show a leader testing which ideas resonated most strongly with different audiences, from rural fellahin-equivalent guajiros to urban professionals.
2. This adaptability, rather than commitment to a single fixed ideology, is itself sometimes identified by historians as one of Castro's most distinctive political skills.

Ideological Evolution: Nationalism to Marxism-Leninism

1. Castro's ideology did not begin as fully formed Marxism but evolved considerably over the course of the 1950s and into the early years of his rule.
2. The 1953 History Will Absolve Me speech itself contained no explicitly Marxist language, focusing instead on land reform, wealth redistribution, and breaking up foreign corporate monopolies.
3. Castro's thinking moved increasingly toward Marxist-Leninist principles of class struggle and anti-capitalism under the direct influence of his brother Raul and the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara.
4. Initially, Castro remained cautious about aligning too closely with the Soviet Union, wary of provoking direct American intervention before his movement had consolidated power.
5. His commitment to explicit socialism solidified more firmly only after 1959, as he sought to build a government prioritising economic equality and national self-sufficiency.
6. Batista's oppressive, US-backed rule reinforced this ideological drift by convincing Castro that meaningful redistribution of wealth would require confronting both the domestic elite and foreign, chiefly American, economic interests directly.
7. This gradual evolution from nationalist reformer to committed Marxist-Leninist is central to any accurate account of why authoritarian rule took the particular ideological form it did in Castro's Cuba.
8. Che Guevara's own background in observing US-backed interventions elsewhere in Latin America, particularly in Guatemala in 1954, shaped the more explicitly anti-imperialist Marxist framework he brought into Castro's inner circle.
9. By the time of the final guerrilla campaign in the Sierra Maestra, described in detail elsewhere in this unit, this ideological shift was already well underway among the movement's core leadership.

Charismatic Leadership and Propaganda of Ideas

1. Castro's personal charisma and populist style of public speaking played a crucial role in mobilising support for his movement well beyond its actual military strength.
2. He consistently presented himself as the authentic voice of Cuba's rural and urban poor, using powerful speeches to inspire loyalty and direct action among his followers.
3. His promise of a new Cuba, free from corruption, social inequity, and foreign economic dominance, gave genuine hope to Cubans who had been marginalised under Batista's rule.
4. Castro cultivated a heroic public image partly through broadcasts advertising ambitious plans to revive the Cuban economy, which helped win cautious support even from some business leaders.
5. Castro's propaganda also successfully exaggerated the scale of his guerrilla forces, convincing Batista's regime that the Sierra Maestra army numbered between 1,000 and 2,000 experienced fighters.
6. In reality, Castro commanded only around 300 fighters for most of the guerrilla campaign, right up until shortly before his final victory in January 1959.
7. This gap between perceived and actual military strength shows how effectively ideas and image, rather than raw military force alone, shaped the course of the Cuban Revolution.
8. Interviews Castro granted to sympathetic foreign journalists during the guerrilla campaign, most famously to the New York Times in February 1957, helped project this exaggerated image internationally as well as domestically.

Spreading the Message: Urban Networks and Radio Rebelde

1. Ideas mattered to the movement's growth well beyond Castro's own personal charisma, since the Moncada Programme's specific promises gave supporters concrete goals to organise around.
2. The Movimiento 26 de Julio, named for the date of the Moncada attack, developed an urban wing alongside the rural guerrilla campaign, spreading these ideas through underground networks in Havana and Santiago.
3. Frank Pais, a schoolteacher who joined the movement after hearing Castro's History Will Absolve Me speech, organised much of this urban resistance before his murder by police in July 1957.
4. Pais's death triggered the largest spontaneous public display of hostility toward Batista since the 1952 coup, showing how far Castro's ideas had already spread beyond his own guerrilla column.
5. Student organisations at the University of Havana provided another crucial channel for spreading revolutionary ideas among Cuba's educated urban youth.
6. Radio broadcasts from the Sierra Maestra, using a station nicknamed Radio Rebelde, allowed Castro's movement to spread its ideological message directly into Cuban homes even while the guerrilla war continued.
7. This combination of a rural guerrilla base, an urban underground network, and radio propaganda meant Castro's ideas reached Cubans through multiple channels simultaneously, not through the Sierra Maestra campaign alone.
8. Understanding this multi-channel spread of ideas helps explain why Castro's movement grew so rapidly despite its genuinely small military size for most of the campaign.

Historiographical Debate: Committed Marxist or Evolving Nationalist?

Fidel Castro's Personal Political Formation at University

1. Castro studied law at the University of Havana in the late 1940s, a period of intense student political activism and gang violence within Cuban university politics.
2. He became involved in student politics and travelled to Bogotá, Colombia in 1948, witnessing the Bogotazo riots that followed the assassination of populist leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán.
3. This early exposure to popular uprising and political violence shaped Castro's developing belief that dramatic, direct action could topple entrenched power structures.
4. His law degree and early legal career, including representing poor clients, reinforced a growing sense that Cuba's existing institutions failed ordinary people.

The Role of Frank País and the Urban Underground

1. Frank País led the 26th of July Movement's urban underground network in Santiago de Cuba, coordinating logistics, recruitment, and sabotage in support of Castro's rural guerrilla campaign.
2. País organised a coordinated urban uprising in Santiago on 30 November 1956, timed for the planned Granma landing, but poor communication meant the boat did not reach Cuba until 2 December, after the uprising had already taken place.
3. País was killed by Batista's police in July 1957, becoming a martyr whose death intensified urban support for the revolution.
4. The urban underground's parallel organisation alongside the rural guerrilla campaign shows the revolutionary movement's ideas spreading through multiple simultaneous channels, not through Castro's rural leadership alone.
