Experiences of Women: The Federation of Cuban Women and Its Limits

The Federation of Cuban Women

1. Women played a central and often underappreciated role in both the Cuban Revolution itself and the post-revolutionary society that followed it.
2. The Federation of Cuban Women, known by its Spanish acronym FMC, was founded in 1960 under the leadership of Vilma Espin Guillois.

8. Sanchez played a crucial logistical role throughout the guerrilla campaign and, after 1959, founded the Office of Historical Affairs, overseeing numerous social and cultural projects.
9. Haydee Santamaria Cuadrado also took part in the Moncada Barracks attack, during which her brother and fiance were both tortured and killed by government forces.
10. After the revolution, Santamaria became a leading cultural figure, founding and directing Casa de las Americas, an institution promoting literature, music, and art from across Latin America.
