Laws and Rules: Balancing Order and Freedom

Society and Structure
1. Every Gesellschaft (society) needs a way to organize how people live together.
2. We use Gesetze (laws) and Regeln (rules) to create Ordnung (order).
3. These rules help protect our Sicherheit (safety) and Rechte (rights).
4. However, rules can sometimes limit our persönliche Freiheit (personal freedom).

4. Starke Antworten (strong answers) in the IB exam explain who the rules serve and why they are necessary.

Note

In German, das Gesetz is usually for the whole country.
Die Regel is more common for daily life, like Schulregeln (school rules) or Hausregeln (house rules).

Rules in the School Environment

The School Context
1. In Paper 1, you are often asked to write about Schulregeln (school rules).
2. A common topic is the Handyverbot (mobile phone ban).
3. Die Schulleitung (the school management) might ban phones to reduce Ablenkung (distraction).
4. Students often argue that phones are wichtige Werkzeuge (important tools) for lernen (learning).
