Climate Predicts a Biome, But Reality Often Differs

Temperature and precipitation are the primary controls on which biome develops in a region.
Climate broadly falls into tropical, temperate, and polar zones, each tending to produce characteristic biomes.
But the biome you would predict from climate alone does not always appear, because secondary factors and human activity get in the way.

The Biome You Would Expect from Climate

Tropical zone
1. Hot, and either wet year-round or seasonally wet, so you would expect rainforest or savanna.
Temperate zone
1. Distinct seasons and moderate rainfall, so you would expect temperate forest or grassland.
Polar zone
1. Very cold and dry, so you would expect tundra or ice cap.

Secondary Factors Can Override the Expected Biome

Even where temperature and rainfall suit a particular biome, natural factors can change what actually grows.
