When the IB says ‘match text type to purpose’ and you decide to play it safe.
Why it matters
Paper 1 is not only about writing in English but about writing in the right way for the right people.
Examiners want to see if you can change your tone, layout, and style depending on audience and purpose.
This is what earns you points in Conceptual Understanding.
If you miss it, even good language will not save you.
Step 1: Audience + Purpose
Audience = Who is reading? A teacher, a friend, the general public?
Purpose = Why are you writing? To inform, persuade, reflect, or entertain?
Your choice of vocabulary, tone, and structure changes depending on these two factors.
Step 2: Match audience and purpose to text type
1. Formal (reports, proposals, essays)
Audience: Teachers, officials, professionals.
Purpose: To inform or argue clearly and objectively.
How this affects writing: Use formal vocabulary, avoid contractions and slang, keep a serious tone.
Tip
Use headings and bullet points in reports.
Include recommendations or conclusions at the end.
Keep the tone neutral and professional.

Introduction to Text Types
In English B, understanding different text types is crucial for effective communication.
A text type refers to the specific form or structure of a written piece, designed for a particular purpose and audience.
Think of text types as different tools in a toolbox - each has a specific function and is used for a particular task.
AnalogyJust like you wouldn't use a hammer to screw in a bolt, you wouldn't use a formal report structure for a personal letter.
DefinitionText TypeA specific form of writing with its own conventions, structure, and purpose.
ExampleExamples of text types include reports, speeches, blogs, letters, and reviews.
