Learn Biology A1.1.1 in this free IB Biology video lesson for A1.1.1 Water as the medium for life.
The video discusses the significance of water as a medium of life, highlighting its essential functions for living organisms.
Key points include:
00:00Hello everyone, this is Hannah
00:03from Revision Dojo and today
00:05we will be covering syllabus
00:06point A1 point 1 point
00:071. Water as a medium
00:09of life. So essentially what
00:12this syllabus point is, is
00:15it's going to be covering
00:16the basic function of water
00:18and why it is important
00:20for living organisms. Now water
00:23is believed to be a
00:25medium for life. Darwin coined
00:27it
00:28you refer to life as
00:29having started in a small
00:30pond. Now our belief has
00:33evolved into stating the oceans
00:34as a medium where life
00:35starts. The most important thing
00:38to remember is that water
00:40is a very good spot
00:42for metabolic and essentially all
00:44biochemical processes to take place.
00:47So when a certain volume
00:48of water is isolated by
00:49memory, we get to see
00:51its functions. So the main
00:53ones that we're going to
00:54mention today are four.
00:56The first one being the
00:58biochemical processes. Now these biochemical
01:04processes include glycolysis, cell respiration,
01:09or even oxbows. Now these
01:12are all going to be
01:13mentioned within the IB syllabus
01:15and you'll know all about
01:17them. The second function of
01:20water is its ability to
01:22obtain nutrients and this includes
01:24foods, nutrients like glucose, amino
01:27acids, and they all come
01:29from the surroundings. The third
01:35thing we will talk about
01:36is the water's ability to
01:40remove waste products. Now these
01:43waste products can be released
01:45from reactions of metabolism and
01:48the main waste product here
01:49is carbon dioxide.
01:52So we're going to write
01:53down waste product removal. Finally,
01:58we've got the most important
02:02function of water, and that
02:03is its ability to sustain
02:05life. Now how exactly does
02:07it sustain life? So this
02:09is essentially through the release
02:11of target and products and
02:13the creation of energy. So
02:16we create energy and as
02:19a result,
02:20it sustains life. So this
02:26creates a very good place
02:28for life functions and hence
02:30why water is the medium
02:32of life.
