Understanding Sustainability
Sustainability
Sustainability refers to the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
- It encompasses three interconnected pillars:
- Environmental Sustainability: Preserving natural resources and ecosystems.
- Economic Sustainability: Ensuring long-term economic growth without depleting resources.
- Social Sustainability: Promoting social equity, justice, and well-being.
- The concept of sustainability gained global prominence with the 1987 Brundtland Report, which emphasized the need for sustainable development as a guiding principle for global policy.

1. Environmental Perspective
- Focus: Protecting ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources.
- Key Concepts:
- Conservation: Preserving natural habitats and species.
- Renewable Energy: Transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources like solar and wind.
- The Paris Agreement (2015) is a landmark international treaty aimed at limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. It highlights the importance of environmental sustainability through collective action.
2. Economic Perspective
- Focus: Balancing economic growth with resource management.
- Key Concepts:
- Circular Economy: Designing products and systems to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency.
- Green Economy: Investing in sustainable industries and technologies.
- Costa Rica's commitment to renewable energy and ecotourism demonstrates how economic sustainability can drive national development while preserving natural resources.
3. Social Perspective
- Focus: Ensuring equity, justice, and well-being for all.
- Key Concepts:
- Social Equity: Addressing inequalities in access to resources and opportunities.
- Community Engagement: Involving local communities in decision-making processes.
- The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include targets for reducing poverty, improving education, and promoting gender equality, highlighting the social dimension of sustainability.
