Paper 2 Listening: Strategies for Success

1. The Importance of a Clear Plan
   1. In the Paper 2 listening exam, you will hear every audio recording exactly two times.
   2. Having a strategy prevents you from feeling Panik (panic) if you do not understand every single word.
   3. A step by step approach helps you find the Hauptaussage (main idea) and the Details (details).
   4. You must demonstrate AO1 by identifying specific information and AO2 by understanding how parts of the text relate to each other.

Preparation: Before the Audio Begins

1. Skim the Questions Quickly
   1. Read the Fragen (questions) to understand the topic of the recording.
   2. Look for the Texttyp (text type) such as an Interview (interview), Nachrichten (news), or a Podcast (podcast).
2. Identify Keywords
   1. Underline or highlight Schlüsselwörter (keywords) in the questions.
   2. Focus on Namen (names), Zahlen (numbers), and question words like wer (who), wo (where), or wann (when).
   3. Look for Verbindungswörter (connecting words) that show cause and effect, such as weil (because) or deshalb (therefore).

The First Listening: Finding the Gist

1. Focus on the Big Picture
   1. During das erste Hören (the first listening), try to understand the general context.
   2. Ask yourself: Wer spricht? (Who is speaking?)
   3. Identify the location: Wo sind sie? (Where are they?)
   4. Determine the main topic: Was ist das Thema? (What is the topic?)
2. Stay Calm and Keep Listening
   1. Do not stop if you miss a sentence or a specific Vokabel (vocabulary word).
   2. Your goal in the first round is to get the Hauptidee (main idea).
   3. You can catch the specific details during the second playback.
