The Recipe for Success
1. Think of the Paper 1 Kriterien (criteria) as a recipe card for the examiner.
2. If you include all the right Zutaten (ingredients), you get the maximum Punktzahl (score).
3. If you forget one part, your score drops even if your German is excellent.
4. These rules ensure you write with Absicht (intention), Klarheit (clarity), and the correct Stil (style).

Note

Paper 1 is your chance to show your writing skills in German.
You will see three different Aufgaben (tasks).
You must choose only one task to complete.
Each task is based on a different Thema (theme) from the IB syllabus.

Criterion A: Language and How You Use It

Focus on Accuracy and Variety
1. This criterion is worth 12 points and looks at how well you actually speak the language.
2. At the ab initio level, examiners look for basic Satzbau (sentence structure) and correct Rechtschreibung (spelling).
3. 1–3 points: You only know the basics, make many Fehler (errors), and the text is hard to read.
4. 4–6 points: You use some different words, but there are still many mistakes.
5. 7–9 points: Your Wortschatz (vocabulary) is good and most sentences are correct.
