IB Design Technology (DT) SL Internal Assessment Example

Modern children spend increasing amounts of time on digital devices, limiting imaginative play and social development. This creates a need for a multifunctional educational toy that encourages creativity, interaction, and learning in a fun and engaging way.SL

IB Grade: 7

Criteria A: Analysis of a Design Opportunity

7/9

Criteria StrandsPro

A.1Problem Description and Design Opportunity

Good

A.2Design Brief Development

Good

A.3Design Specification Development

Good

Criteria Feedback

The student clearly identifies a relevant problem and supports it with a broad range of contextual and primary research.
The student's brief includes many important parameters such as users, purpose, safety, aesthetics, materials, sustainability, and workshop constraints.
The student's specification is detailed and research-informed, showing a clear line from evidence to design requirements.

Some requirements shift across sections, especially the size and budget expectations, which weakens consistency.
A few specification statements are still subjective or difficult to test, so they need more precise, measurable wording.
Not every requirement is fully justified by a specific research outcome.

Criteria B: Conceptual Design

7/9

Criteria StrandsPro

B.1Development of Ideas

Good

B.2Concept Modeling

Good

B.3Design Selection and Justification

Good

Criteria Feedback

The student develops several distinct concepts rather than small variations of one idea, which shows real breadth of exploration.
The student's concept models are visually clear and are used to inform design changes and refinements.
The student justifies their final selection with relevant reasons tied to functionality, safety, manufacture, and user needs.

The analysis of concept models is often descriptive rather than rigorous or measured.
The comparison of ideas is not always explicit enough against the specifications, and the selection table is incomplete.
Some feasibility claims would be stronger with more technical detail and clearer comparison of alternatives.

Criteria C: Development of a Detailed Design

7/9

Criteria StrandsPro

C.1Materials and Manufacturing Choices

Good

C.2Design Proposal Development

Good

C.3Manufacturing Plan

Good
