IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) IA Grader (2026 Syllabus)
This tool grades your ESS Internal Assessment (IA) against the official 2026 rubric (first assessment May 2026). It provides criterion-by-criterion feedback (A–F) for a total of 30 marks. The IA contributes 25% of your SL final grade and 20% of your HL final grade.
Criteria Overview
ESS uses an asymmetric 6-criterion structure: criteria A, B, C are each out of 4 marks; D, E, F are each out of 6 marks. The criteria reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the course — they cover environmental inquiry, perspective-tension analysis, methodology, data, conclusion and evaluation.
Criterion A: Research question and inquiry (4 marks)
Assesses how the student establishes and explores an environmental issue (local or global) and develops it into a focused research question.
Band descriptors:
- 3–4 marks
- Explains a local or global environmental topic or issue with sufficient background research to support the research question.
- States a focused research question that addresses the chosen environmental topic or issue.
- 1–2 marks
- Describes a local or global environmental topic or issue but with errors or omissions showing a limited understanding.
- States a research question but it lacks focus or is not linked to the chosen environmental topic or issue.
Criterion B: Strategy (4 marks)
Assesses understanding of how tensions between perspectives can impact the environmental or societal outcomes of a strategy that addresses the issue central to the investigatxion.
