The student maintains a recognisable and sustained focus on how the play explores justice, prejudice, representation, and reasonable doubt.
The student's research question is clearly signposted and gives the essay a coherent direction.
The student includes relevant contextual material that helps frame the play historically.
The student shows some awareness of how different source types can support the inquiry.

The inquiry is quite broad and sometimes shifts into summary rather than tightly controlled analysis.
The student's methodology is mostly implicit, so the reader is not always told why particular sources or lenses were chosen.
Some contextual material is only loosely connected to the dramatic argument.
The opening could more clearly explain how the essay will investigate the question through close reading and source selection.

1.1·Strength

Page 1• Click to view

The research question is ambitious and clearly signposted, and it gives the essay a recognisable line of enquiry from the start. The dual focus on both “evolving societal perceptions” and “traditional notions of justice” creates a strong framework for comparison throughout the essay.

1.2·Weakness

Page 3• Click to view

This opening is clear, but it quickly shifts into plot summary rather than establishing the analytical method or specific literary lens. The student should explain earlier how the essay will use dramatic methods, historical context, or source selection to answer the question, so the reader can see how the inquiry will be investigated rather than just described.

1.3·Weakness

Page 4• Click to view

This contextual material is interesting, but it is only loosely controlled by the research question and interrupts the essay’s focus on the play. The student should either connect this philosophical material more explicitly to Rose’s dramatic choices or remove some of it so the discussion stays tightly aligned to the question.

1.4·Suggestion

Page 6• Click to view

A brief source-selection explanation here would strengthen the methodology. The student could clarify why this historical evidence is the most relevant background for interpreting Rose’s play, and why it is more useful than broader general history of juries.

1.5·Question

Page 7• Click to view

What specific evidence in the play shows that Rose is actively “advocating” for reform rather than simply exposing problems within the system? That distinction would help sharpen the focus of the argument.

1.6·Strength

Page 8• Click to view

This sentence states the line of argument clearly and directly. The student has a strong sense of purpose here, and that clarity helps the reader follow the essay’s movement from context into analysis.

1.7·Weakness

Page 11• Click to view

This claim is too broad on its own and reads like a summary of the whole essay rather than a focused argument for the section. The student should narrow it by specifying which traditional notion is being reinforced here—such as evidence, due process, or juror duty—so the discussion becomes more precise.

1.8·Suggestion

Page 14• Click to view

This section would be stronger if it were tied more explicitly to the research question. The student could show exactly how conflict helps reveal both evolving justice and traditional justice, rather than treating it as a separate thematic summary.

Criteria B: Knowledge and Understanding

4/6

Criteria StrandsPro

B.1Knowledge of topic and sources

Moderate

B.2Use of terminology and concepts

Moderate

Criteria Feedback

The student shows a good general understanding of the play’s plot, characters, and central tensions.
The student uses subject-specific terms such as prejudice, bias, groupthink, reasonable doubt, and representation with reasonable accuracy.
The student connects the play to historically relevant issues such as jury exclusion and civil rights-era injustice.
The student demonstrates awareness that the play’s concerns are both legal and moral.

The student's use of sources is often more descriptive than analytical.
Some literary and dramatic terminology is used imprecisely or without enough explanation of effect.
The student sometimes names a concept without showing exactly how Rose develops it through dialogue, characterisation, or stagecraft.
The essay would be stronger if contextual knowledge were more directly tied to specific moments in the play.

2.1·Strength

Page 3• Click to view

This is a relevant and accurate contextual link that shows the student understands the social background of the play. It helps ground the interpretation of the all-male, all-white jury in a concrete historical reality rather than a vague modern assumption.

2.2·Weakness

Page 4• Click to view

The historical and philosophical references are relevant, but the essay does not always show why these particular sources are authoritative or how they specifically illuminate Rose’s play. The student should integrate source knowledge more critically by explaining what each source contributes to the interpretation.

2.3·Weakness

Page 5• Click to view

This idea is promising, but the phrasing is imprecise and the claim is broader than the evidence shown. The student should either support this historical claim with clearer evidence or keep the point narrower and focus on what Juror 7’s behaviour directly reveals about deliberation.

2.4·Suggestion

Page 6• Click to view

The student could strengthen knowledge use by pairing this contextual evidence with one specific moment in the play. That would show not just that the source is relevant, but exactly how it clarifies Rose’s dramatic presentation of representation and exclusion.

2.5·Question

Page 7• Click to view

How far does calling Juror 8 the “moral centre” simplify the play’s complexity? Considering the other jurors’ eventual change of mind, the student could ask whether justice is shown as communal, not just embodied in one character.

2.6·Weakness

Page 8• Click to view

The quotation is useful, but the analysis should explain more precisely how the wording and tone expose bias. The student currently states the effect rather than examining how Rose’s dialogue makes Juror 10’s prejudice dramatic and unmistakable.

2.7·Strength

Page 10• Click to view

This demonstrates a solid grasp of the central legal and social concept of groupthink and connects it clearly to the jury room. The student shows a good understanding of how the play’s premise makes abstract ideas concrete.

2.8·Strength

Page 11• Click to view

This identifies two important ideas behind the play’s view of justice: evidence and moral responsibility. The student is moving beyond plot summary here and showing a sound conceptual understanding of the text’s concerns.

2.9·Weakness

Page 12• Click to view

This is a strong interpretive idea, but the wording is awkward and the analysis remains general. The student should describe more precisely how the confined setting intensifies moral scrutiny and why this matters for understanding Rose’s treatment of justice.

Criteria C: Critical Thinking

12/12

Criteria StrandsPro

C.1Research quality and relevance

Poor

C.2Analysis depth and effectiveness

Poor

C.3Discussion and evaluation

Poor

Criteria Feedback

The student builds a coherent overall argument about the play challenging automatic assumptions about justice while also affirming the need for evidence and deliberation.
The student includes relevant quotations and contextual material to support their claims.
The student shows some genuine analytical insight when connecting the jury-room dynamics to broader ideas such as prejudice and group pressure.
The student's conclusion returns to the main line of argument and brings the discussion together effectively.

The student's analysis often stays at the level of theme or explanation rather than close literary and dramatic analysis.
Some claims are supported more by general interpretation than by detailed examination of language, structure, or stagecraft.
Evaluation is present, but it could be more critical and nuanced, especially around Juror 8 and the play’s resolution.
At times the argument repeats the same ideas rather than developing fresh critical insight.

3.1·Weakness

Page 3• Click to view

This is accurate as plot summary, but it does not yet analyse how Rose structures the changing deliberation. The student should connect the vote shifts to specific dramatic techniques, such as pacing, confrontation, or the gradual release of evidence, to deepen the analysis.

3.2·Strength

Page 4• Click to view

This is one of the more perceptive points in the essay because it moves from theme to dramatic effect. The student recognises that Rose’s method shapes audience response, which is a key step toward more sophisticated analysis.

3.3·Weakness

Page 5• Click to view

This comparison is useful, but it would be stronger if the student explained how the contrast is created through dialogue and interaction. At present, the essay states the conclusion without fully showing the evidence behind it.

3.4·Suggestion

Page 6• Click to view

Consider pushing this point further by asking what Rose wants the audience to infer from that homogeneity. Would a more diverse jury necessarily change the verdict, or is the play also showing that prejudice can persist even within a representative system?

3.5·Weakness

Page 8• Click to view

The idea is strong, but the comment remains general because it does not explain how the outburst works as drama. The student should examine the wording, escalation, and effect on other jurors, since that is where the analysis becomes more literary and less explanatory.

3.6·Strength

Page 10• Click to view

This is a strong use of conceptual research because it helps explain the jurors’ behaviour in a meaningful way. The student is using theory to illuminate the text rather than inserting it as isolated background information.

3.7·Weakness

Page 11• Click to view

This conclusion is too compressed and the causal chain is not clearly argued. The student should separate the claim about reasonable doubt from the plot outcome and show more carefully how the play demonstrates that principle at work.

3.8·Question

Page 12• Click to view

Is Juror 8 presented as universally correct, or does the play invite the audience to question the limits of one man’s moral authority? Exploring that tension would make the evaluation more nuanced.

3.9·Suggestion

Page 15• Click to view

A stronger evaluation would acknowledge a limitation in this ending. The student could consider whether the play’s self-correction depends too heavily on Juror 8’s influence, which would make the system seem less stable and more idealised.

3.10·Strength

Page 15• Click to view

The conclusion successfully returns to the central argument and synthesises the essay’s main ideas. It shows that the student can connect the play’s dramatic conflict to a broader claim about justice without losing sight of the research question.

Criteria D: Presentation

4/4

Criteria StrandsPro

D.1Structure appropriateness

Excellent

D.2Layout and formatting

Good

Criteria Feedback

The submission has a clear overall structure with an introduction, signposted sections, conclusion, and bibliography.
The document is readable and generally professionally laid out.
The student includes page numbering and a word count at the start, which helps meet formal expectations.

Some sections feel brief or somewhat detached from the main line of argument.
There are inconsistencies in citation style and bibliography formatting.
Several reference entries are incomplete or not fully standardised.
The organisation could be more efficient if related ideas were combined rather than repeated across separate sections.

4.1·Strength

The word count requirement is clearly included at the start of the document, which meets the formal submission expectations.

4.2·Strength

Page 2• Click to view

The overall structure is clear and appropriate: the work includes a table of contents, introduction, thematic body sections, conclusion, and bibliography. This makes the argument easy to follow and shows good awareness of essay organisation.

4.3·Weakness

Page 2• Click to view

This section is very brief compared with the others and feels somewhat detached from the main line of argument. The student should either integrate this material into the surrounding sections or develop it with more analytical purpose so the structure is more efficient.

4.4·Weakness

Page 16• Click to view

This reference appears malformed and inconsistent in its ordering and punctuation. The student should revise all bibliography entries to follow one citation style carefully, because inconsistent referencing weakens the professionalism of the presentation.

4.5·Weakness

Page 16• Click to view

The bibliography shows that the student has attempted to document sources, but several entries need correction and standardisation. This one, for example, should be checked for the author’s name and title capitalisation so the referencing system is consistent and reliable.

4.6·Weakness

Page 16• Click to view

This entry is incomplete because it is missing the full publication details and links across to the next line awkwardly. The student should make sure every source entry is complete and easy to trace so the bibliography functions properly.

4.7·Suggestion

Page 16• Click to view

The student could improve presentation by checking for duplicate naming and making the formatting of web sources consistent across the bibliography. That would make the references easier to read and more professional.
