IB Economics HL Extended Essay Example

The student chose a focused, specific topic with a clear location, time period, and real-world economic context.

The student's research question is stated clearly and remains connected to the investigation throughout most of the report.

The student selected a generally relevant method using hotel-price comparisons across concert and non-concert dates, supported by proximity groupings.

The investigation’s wording sometimes shifts between hotel prices, hotel revenue, tourism effects, and wider industry outcomes.

The method does not fully support every claim it makes, especially where it moves beyond advertised prices into broader economic conclusions.

Some source choices and procedural decisions are not explained in enough detail to show fully informed selection.

The student applies several relevant economics ideas, including demand, elasticity, market structure, dynamic pricing, and externalities.

The student's primary hotel-price data is mostly relevant to the question and is used in graphs and comparisons rather than left as raw information.

The student makes good use of at least one academic source to connect their case study to wider research.

Some concepts are used less precisely than they should be, especially when distinguishing time-based pricing from true price discrimination.

Several claims rely on economic language that is broader than the evidence collected can really support.

The student's secondary source base is somewhat narrow, and some of the material is not as clearly reproducible or rigorous as it could be.
